Four scarce Medieval style tiles hand painted in the 1930s/40s by Rosalind Ord for Packard & Ord. The tiles depict scenes from the Battle of Hastings in 1066 which was immortalised in the Bayeaux Tapestry.
All four tiles have been reclaimed and as such show signs of their original use - crazing, nibbles to the edges and stains to the reverse but none are cracked, or seriously damaged.
About Packard & Ord.
In the early 1930s two schoolteachers, Sylvia Packard and Rosalind Ord, found that their mutual interest in painting ceramic tiles could earn them a living. In 1936 the Packard and Ord partnership, using the hallmark ‘P&O’, began production in Barnfield, Marlborough.
Queen Mary and Fortnum and Mason were regular customers, and examples can still be found today in the V&A and private collection not to mention still adorning walls and fireplaces.
