A fine example of a Victorian lacquered papier-mâché writing slope/box.
This dainty box is in excellent condition, is copiously inlaid with shimmering nacre and has a central oval framed decoration of a sprig of flowers and leaves to the lid.
Inside the slope there is a writing surface lined with its original embossed pink velvet with a tab that when lifted reveals a small void (for love letters?).
There is a compartment containing the original brass lidded ink well, a stamp compartment and flip lid pen tray.
There is structure of the box is sound with firmly attached hinges and working lock with key.
There are no losses to the inlaid nacre but some of the overpainting has rubbed away over time.
