Scarce large Staffordshire Flatback spill vase entitled “Band Of Hope”

The Flatback depicts a lady holding the hand of a small child with the spill vase beside her fashioned as a tree with the snake of temptation wound around its trunk. She carries a religious shield and the child a flag.

The Band of Hope was a temperance movement founded in Leeds in 1847 by the Rev. Jabez Tunnicliffe predominantly for working class children. This original foundation became a national organisation in 1855 and continues today as Hope UK.

Overall the Flatback is in good condition for type of ware and age. Unlike so many Staffordshire pieces I’ve seen, the crazing is minimal. The figure does however, have a chip to the lip of the spill vase.
