Large Carltonware “Handcraft” vase in the scarce “delphinium” pattern 3273.

The vase has a lovely silky matte glaze and has been hand painted all the way around the main body with delphiniums and leaves. The palette of soft blues, lilac and vibrant blues is typical of the colours predominantly used for the handcraft range.

The vase is fully marked to the underside with the Carltonware Ware Handcraft backstamp and also has the pattern number, order numbers and registration number 742596. The registration number dates the design (not necessarily the vase) to circa 1928.

The interior of the vase is nice and clean and the vase is free from chips, cracks or restoration. However, there is imperceptible glaze craze which I have tried to capture in my photographs. This is only visible when you get really close up and scrutinise the vase with a magnifying glass.

Wiltshaw & Robinsons Ltd created the Handcraft range in 1928 as a direct response to the thirst for the hand painted wares being produced by their competitors. This range was produced into the 1930s and whilst not as rare as their “Best Ware”, is nonetheless scarce owing to it being produced in smaller numbers.
