The Bestlite BL1 Table Lamp, designed by Robert Dudley Best in 1930, is an enduring icon of Bauhaus design and British heritage. Loved for its sleek, functional design, the lamp combines industrial inspiration with timeless elegance. Most famously, it was used by Winston Churchill at his desk in Whitehall, earning its place in history as a design classic. With its swan-necked stand, bell-shaped shade, and minimalist aesthetic, the BL1 embodies the modernist ideals of form and function. Highly adjustable, the BL1 allows you to tailor the light to your needs.

Its height can be adjusted along the stand, while the arm and shade pivot to direct light precisely where needed.

The lamp has a minimum height of 53cm and when fully extended measures 83cm. Base diameter is 21.5cm.

The main stem and moveable arm are chrome plated, the base and shade are aluminium.

The chrome lamp holder has a ‘Match stick’ type push switch with red and black ends. Lamp takes a large bayonet bulb.

The lamp has been rewired using new purple braided 3 core cable and has a new black 3 amp plug.

The original wiring can be seen in the last picture, the purple piece hasn’t faded like the rest as it was inside the tube, the white earth strand was the earth and fixed to the tube with a machine screw.

Some scratching to chrome.
