Stunning museum quality oil lamp standing 62cm tall overall.
The lamp has an ornate four footed brass base with each foot bearing a mask head face, the underside is weighted and is impressed with ‘Messengers’.
The main body and lid of the lamp was made by Zsolnay Pecs and is decorated all over with a gold outlined Iznik style pattern, in shades of muted pinks, ochres, browns, ambers and navy blue. The porcelain is fully marked to the underside but this is only visible when the lamp is disassembled (pictures show the marks). The marks also include the impressed numbers that Zsolnay used, in this case the number “1844” which dates this piece firmly to between circa 1885 - 1887.
The interior of the lid conceals an intact oil reservoir.
The font has a Messengers lugged type collar which is fitted with a fully marked “Messengers Patent” Duplex burner complete with wicks. The burner has a key lift rise and fall mechanism for ease of lighting and extinguishing, a working snuffer lever and glass chimney.
The integrated shade gallery supports a stunning antique graduated cranberry glass frilled, tulip shaped shade, which has an acid etched design of daffodils and fritillary flowers. The shade is in excellent undamaged condition.
