19th century Agate Beam Scale By Bartlett & Son Bristol Mahogany/Brass Fantastic Condition.
Standing 62.5cm tall with base measuring 53.5 x 26 x 3.5cm.
The scales have been taken apart and restored.
The mahogany base has been stripped of old varnish, sanded and has had two coats of wax applied so it now has a beautifully grained warm lustre.
The brass almost black and was stripped of old peeling lacquer and polished. The buyer will decide wether to leave it and let it age, polish often or apply new lacquer.
The beam an an impressed “Patent Agate Balance” on one end and “Bartlett & Son Makers Bristol” to the other end.
Three chains hold a brass pan at one end and a brass hanging hook holds a removable pan at the other.
The beam hangs from a bracket stamped ‘Class B. to weigh 2lb’.
The central pole has a thread at the end that screws into a threaded brass socket fitted into the wooden base.
The scales will be sent dismantled, when screwing the central pole in to the base it takes some effort to tighten it up to face forward.
There are eight weights - 2lbs unmarked, 1lb marked V9R Avoir, 8oz marked V9R, 4oz marked V9R, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz marked W@T Avery, and 1/4oz unmarked.
There is a small split at the back of the central brass tube as shown in the last picture.
